A total of 7,200sf of mixed use studio art space in a former tea factory in East New York, Brooklyn. The project addresses challenges of reintroducing systems and structure to a derelict envelope, as well as two contrasting interior conditions: 15 “white cube” galleries and an almost untouched poche of common spaces, separated by a playful line constantly jogging at 45 degrees.
This friction between found and new / roughness and cleanliness also defines the design of the facade. The building has been appended many times over the past 9 decades. We will be adding to that collection, while strategically altering, enlarging and infilling some of the existing apertures.
