An entry for the New York City Department of Housing and Preservation Development’s “Big Ideas Small Lots” Competition.

We begin with the idea that how space is perceived might count more than a game of numbers—that space quality might mean something different than space quantity, and that quality might be as much about volume as it is area. In a city that is growing ever-denser, with space at a premium, what models of urban living are disappearing? The townhouse, once a staple of neighborhoods around New York, has become an option for only a select few, with the majority of that stock subdivided and rented floor-by-floor. The townhouse offers inimitable spaces produced by a multi-level organization that feels as private and intimate as open and dynamic. Here, we investigate that fluid section over an ultra-narrow plan.
